A Sketch of the Musical Heritage of the Hani (Yunnan / China)
Résumé
The Hani are a Tibeto-Burman speaking people of China scattered over a wide area in Southern China and neighbouring countries. In China proper, the Hani, whose population is reported to be more than a million mainly inhabit large swathes of mountains along the banks of the Red River (Honghe) which runs through the southeastern part of Yunnan, especially the Ailao range flanking its southern bank. Several articles and books are available in Mandarin, but so far nothing has been published on Hani music that is accessible to non-Sinologists. Although very scanty, this report is the first attempt to introduce the musical tradition of this ethnic group to a larger audience.
