Le coût énergétique de la course à pied de durée prolongée : étude des paramètres d'influence

Abstract : Purpose.- The aim of this study was to identify factors that may influence both measurement and interpretation of the energy cost related to long distance running. Current knowledge and key points.- Many terms, such as "oxygen cost", "metabolic cost", "energy cost of running", "oxygen consumption" are considered to be equivalent to "running economy": it has been suggested that these expressions would define the oxygen uptake rate (V02) at steady state between 60-90% of VO2max at a submaximal running speed. This would imply that lactate does not accumulate progressively. However, lactate concentrations can increase above rest values, thus providing extra-energy which is not usually taken into account. Future prospects and projects.- Running economy would significantly contribute to the variations observed in running performances in runners of homogeneous level. It has been shown that running economy may differ in individuals who have identical athletic capabilities. However, it may not necessarily show a highly significant correlation with sports performance which is a multifactorial process. Higher values of other parameters may compensate low running economy values and vice versa. In addition, many factors, such as environmental conditions (wind resistance, circuit gradients, etc.) or subject's specificities (training status, fatigue...) are known or hypothesized to influence running economy: combination of these factors alters the energy cost of running during exercise and could modify the athlete's performance. Athlete's efficiency evaluated from running economy measurements requires prior knowledge of factors that may modify this parameter. These factors include both the athlete's characteristics and the specificity of the exercise performed.
