Église catholique et technologies informatisées : Interactions médiatiques avec un public de masse

Abstract : My contribution will study Vatican digital communication – in a context of revaluation of the representation of the institution – in particular when it is achieved via mass communication facilities. Based on the observation that today the Catholic Church uses seven social networks and three mobile applications, my work consists in examining these media practices when the use of Twitter, Instagram and YouTube makes it possible for it to communicate with a large audience, far beyond Catholic believers. This work shows what is at stake at a time when our societies undergo a profound turmoil caused by the boom of digital technologies, leading to individuals’ worldwide networking and decentralization in the flow of ideas. When studying the user’s reception process based on the relationship between medium and speech, it appears that, due to a misuse of Twitter, Instagram and YouTube functionalities, notably by instrumentalising the pope on the one hand and the Vatican Secretariat for Communication on the other hand, the Catholic Church manages to massively reach a community of connected users. If the Institution adopts already existing mass communication devices by favoring its own communication practice, it simultaneously shows the limits concerning the use of its own mobile applications thus revealing its difficulty to master the immediacy of digital technology and the importance of the user’s experience.
