Les ruraux

Abstract : The 2003 DATAR report on rural France in 2020 invited us to take a fresh look at rural areas that "crystallize the hopes and anxieties of French society" [DATAR, 2003]. In fact, rural areas are undergoing profound changes due to the power of attraction they exert on urban societies (positive net migration). The result is new links with cities, resulting in economic and functional changes (residential space, leisure, added value creation by agriculture, industry, the tertiary sector). Bruno Jean [1997] speaks of the new territories of rurality for Quebec in order to analyze rurality as a sociological object but also as a fact of society. Since the mid-1970s, rural areas have undergone significant demographic, social and cultural changes, varying in degree according to the trajectories of each space. This new situation favors a complexification of spatial dynamics that blurs the old representations of the countryside.
